Chaos Erupts at Supreme Court as Lawyer Beaten After Allegedly Throwing Shoe at Former CJI Gavai
A chaotic scene unfolded at the Supreme Court in New Delhi after lawyer Rakesh Kishor, accused of throwing a shoe at former CJI D.Y. Chandrachud Gavai, was assaulted with slippers inside the court premises. Police intervened swiftly, and an investigation into the incident and related security concerns is underway.
According to witnesses, the confrontation broke out shortly after Kishor was presented for his scheduled hearing. As he was escorted through the corridor, a group of people confronted him and began beating him with slippers. Throughout the altercation, Kishor was heard repeatedly shouting slogans in praise of Sanatan Dharma, even as police personnel pushed through the crowd to restore order.
Security officers quickly intervened and pulled Kishor away from the attackers, bringing the situation under control before it escalated further. Authorities have since cordoned off the area and initiated an inquiry into both the assault and the earlier shoe-throwing episode. Officials stated that appropriate legal action would follow once a full assessment of the incident is completed.
The episode has raised questions about maintaining security and decorum within the country’s highest court, where disruptions of this scale are extremely rare. As police continue their investigation, the incident has ignited debate over rising tensions in public spaces and the challenges faced by security forces in safeguarding judicial institutions.
